Research Overview
Dr. Shayan Sharif and his team focus on improving poultry health by studying immune responses to viral pathogens, including Marek’s disease and avian influenza. They examine T-cell–mediated immunity, the role of gut microbiota in disease resistance, and the impact of antibiotics and probiotics on immune development.
In their avian influenza vaccine project, the team developed a novel vaccine and tested early-life vaccination strategies, including in ovo administration. AI and modeling techniques were applied to simulate virus transmission through respiratory and oral-fecal routes, evaluate vaccine efficacy, and optimize vaccination strategies. These models also support a decision support system (DSS) for predicting outbreak risks and guiding interventions, improving both disease control and cost-effectiveness.

Dr. Sharif's Projects
Predict, Prevent, Contain: Combating Avian Influenza
This project brings together virology, animal health, epidemiology, and AI to predict, prevent, and contain avian influenza outbreaks. It integrates surveillance, vaccine development, and AI-driven forecasting to protect poultry health, food security, and public health.
